06.03.2024The Japanese take such good care of things/used items because:
1) It's culturally ingrained at an early age to be clean and respectful of your surroundings, so that lends itself to taking care of your personal belongings as well. The Shinto religion even claims there are spirits in inanimate objects, so even thatfosters some amount of respect. Eating is culturally reserved mostly for mealtime or designated areas, so people typically won't eat or drink right on top of their games/game boxes while they play like some Westerners do.
2) Because even wealthy Japanese people have fairly small houses compared to America/Australia/Canada/etc., you can't really just hoard a giant collection, you MUST trade purely for space reasons, so from the start they want to keep the game nice so a reseller will be interested in buying it from them when they inevitably have to trade it. This is also why games that would be bought in a second in the West stay on the shelves because even if someone likes the game, if they've already played it they don't want it taking up precious shelf space purely to collect.
3) Even if a game isn't in perfect shape when traded in, resellers will often thoroughly clean them, I've seen workers scrubbing traded-in controllers and games with a toothbrush to get it as clean as possible. So, even if a game is traded in not entirely perfect, the store will do their best to make it as good as it can be.
